A swing stage is a suspended platform that hangs from cables anchored to a roof, allowing workers to access the exterior of a building at any height without full scaffold coverage. The Core Components
A swing stage system has four essential parts working together:
1. Roof Anchors (Tiebacks)
Every swing stage starts at the roof, where the system is anchored to structural tiebacks — engineered connection points rated to hold the platform, its occupants, and its equipment load with a significant safety margin. These anchors are inspected and, on new construction, are often built into the roof structure specifically for this purpose.
2. Outriggers or Davit Arms
From the anchors, the system extends outward using outrigger beams or davit arms that project the suspension point out and over the roof edge, positioning the cables to lower the platform along the building face. 3. Hoists and Cables
Wire rope cables run from the outriggers down to the platform, threading through hoists that raise and lower the stage. Most modern swing stages use motorized hoists for controlled, consistent movement, though hand-operated systems are still used for lighter or shorter-duration work.
4. The Platform
The platform itself is a suspended deck — typically aluminum — sized for the crew and equipment it needs to carry. Guardrails, toe boards, and fall protection anchor points are standard, and every worker on the platform is tied off to an independent fall arrest system separate from the platform's suspension.
How the System Moves
Once rigged, the swing stage is raised or lowered along the face of the building using the hoists, allowing the crew to work section by section from the top down (or bottom up, depending on the scope). On new construction jobs, the stage typically moves in sync with the floor-by-floor progress of curtain wall or glazing installation, which is why sequencing and scheduling matter as much as the rig itself.
Two-Point vs. Multi-Point Swing Stages
Most swing stages use a two-point suspension — one cable at each end of the platform — which is standard for most facade, window, and curtain wall work.
